The Different Types of Calipers
The Different Types of Calipers for Precise Measurements
There are many types of different measuring tools available for home and commercial use, and each has its own applications. Calipers may be some of the most accurate and versatile measurement devices around.
These tools are excellent at providing precision dimensions such as the diameter, depth, and thickness of items. In fact, they’re particularly useful with objects that are round or irregular in shape, which other devices often struggle with.
There are several different varieties of these precise measuring tools to consider. In this article, the experts at Penn Tool Co. explain the different kinds of calipers on the market, and the best applications for each.
What are the Different Kinds of Calipers?
There are 6 different types of these essential quality control measuring devices, including:
- Dial
- Digital
- Jenny
- Micrometers
- Spring Point
- Vernier
Dial Calipers
Dial calipers are the most common type of caliper, and what people typically think of when they hear the word. They have a large, easy-to-read dial that displays measurements in increments of 0.001”, with larger sizes also available (0.01” or 0.02”).
Dial calipers can be used for both inside and outside measurements, as well as depth readings. Plus, most have a fine-adjustment knob that allows for even more precise measurements.
Major advantages of these calipers are their affordability and durability — they’re built to last. Remember to “zero out” these tools before use to ensure they produce accurate readings.
Digital Calipers
Digital calipers work in a similar way to dial calipers, but they have a digital readout that displays measurements in increments of 0.0005”. These calipers are slightly more expensive than their dial counterparts, but they offer increased accuracy and ease of use.
Digital calipers also typically include features like zero-setting for relative measurements, data output, and automatic power off to preserve battery life. These advantages make this tool ideal for professional settings.
Jenny Calipers
Jenny calipers (also called bow spring calipers) are a type of vernier caliper that’s specifically designed for measuring the thickness of sheet metal. They have one fixed jaw and one moveable jaw, both of which are bowed so they can grip the material being measured from both sides.
Jenny calipers are a necessity for anyone working with sheet metal, as they provide superior accuracy compared to other measuring tools. They’re also relatively affordable and easy to use, making them a good choice for hobbyists and professionals alike.
Micrometers
A micrometer is a type of caliper that’s designed for taking extremely precise measurements (usually in increments of 0.0001”). They have a screw thread that moves the measuring jaws closer or further apart, allowing for very precise adjustments.
Micrometers are typically used in industrial and professional settings, where accuracy is critical. They can be used for inside, outside, and depth measurements like other calipers, but they’re most often used to measure small objects or features with great precision.
Spring Point Calipers
Spring point calipers are similar to vernier calipers, but they have a spring-loaded mechanism that extends the jaws automatically. This feature is helpful when taking inside measurements of pipes and other cylindrical objects.
Spring point calipers can be used for all of the same types of measurements as other calipers (inside, outside, depth, etc.). The main advantage of these calipers is the convenience of the spring-loaded jaws, which can make taking measurements quicker and easier.
Vernier Calipers
Vernier calipers are another analog option (meaning they don’t have a digital readout). They feature a main scale with inch or metric markings, and a vernier scale that provides more precise readings.
These calipers are slightly less common than dial or digital models, but they offer increased accuracy for critical measurements. Vernier calipers can be used for inside, outside, and depth measurements like other types of calipers.
A few models also include a fourth measurement function — step depth — which is ideal for taking measurements of recesses and slots. Additionally, several high-end vernier scales are beginning to incorporate screens similar to those found on digital calipers.
There are 7 Types of Vernier Caliper
Further diversifying the category of calipers are the 7 kinds of vernier caliper, including:
- Flat Edge
- Knife Edge
- Flat and Knife Edge
- Vernier Depth Gauge
- Vernier Dial Caliper
- Vernier Gear Tooth Caliper
- Vernier Height Gauge
