Safety is the Number One Priority

Manhole operations require knowledge and extreme precision, as it is extremely hazardous, especially if the safety protocols are not followed. The team cannot go cold turkey on this project, whereas each team member must have copious knowledge about manhole construction while being aware of the safety protocols in order to achieve success. Before starting the project, the team must also be aware and alert of potential hazards that are involved while dealing with heavy concrete covers and the hole itself.

Dangers you Must be Aware of

●Breaking the cover

○There's a chance the cover might get stuck in its ring, as removal measures will lead to the usage of various tools, which can increase the chance of concrete breakage

●Trip or falling

○After removing the cover, workers must place a barrier guarding the hole to prevent workers from by accidently falling into the deep and dangerous hole

The Importance of Warning Signs

After the cover is removed, a barrier must be put into place by the workers. Besides taking this necessary measure for the team, it’s also even more necessary for the public who will be passing by the worksite. The public must be informed of any risks regarding the construction and that sewer work is being carried out. They must be aware of the operations taking place, which will result in decreasing the drivers’ speed while passing the worksite, decreasing the chance of an accident. Lastly, there will be tons of workers working directly on and around the project, but there also must be workers watching from the outside of the fencing. They must be present in order to prevent any unwanted people from getting too close to the project, which can cause many problems.

Knowledgeable People Prevents Accidents

Safety is a team effort, whereas every team member must be made aware of each and every part of the operation. Everyone must have their chin up and must be on task during the entire operation, while being willing to collaborate and help the team. During each manhole related project, a team requires specific people to do different jobs on the site.

●Must have a “competent person”

○This person has the knowledge and experience to make sure the project runs smoothly.

○He or she is also responsible for making the safety requirements clear to every worker on the site prior to the start of operations.

●Must be a person in charge of the worksite

○Responsible for making workers aware of hazards prior to the start of the operations.

○Must maintain, inspect, and evaluate all the parts of the team throughout the project, making sure the workers are correctly doing their job safely.

Three Important Musts, No Exceptions

●Well trained workers

●Must be aware of the hazardous environment

●Being aware of all potential dangers
